Overview

The Master in High Performance Sport is designed for students from diverse backgrounds and delivered using flexible learning methods suitable for working professionals, domestic and international students. The course structure enables full-time or part-time study where students can enter or exit at a Graduate Certificate (4 subjects), Graduate Diploma (8 subjects) or Master’s (12 subjects) level. This nested course structure provides a solid grounding of the knowledge and skills required in a variety of high performance sport careers whilst offering the opportunity to advance and tailor knowledge and skills development at an advanced level.

The course is developed and delivered in collaboration with industry experts from the field, with each subject comprising of a mix of theory and evidence-based practice. Research-inspired course content is delivered by world-leading academics and industry partners, which allows students to apply an expert level of knowledge and understanding to a range of areas that meets the diverse needs of the high performance sport industry. Graduates enter the workforce as expert and collaborative problem solvers, who are capable of leading, managing and inspiring in the field of high performance sport.

In the Master in High Performance Sport students undertake up to three professional internships with organisations in the sport industry. This allows students to apply their knowledge, develop professionally, and network with industry partners. Students are encouraged to develop their ideas and test these in real world environments with practical relevance. Current workplace employment may also be considered for supplemental credit towards these internships. With the completion of three internships, students may be eligible for individual professional accreditation with Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA), the peak national professional association for sport and exercise scientists.

Staff are highly respected globally in the field of sport and exercise science, health and human performance with extensive links to industry both locally and internationally. Their work focuses on collaborating with coaches to enhance athlete welfare and highlights the relationships between physical exercise and optimal performance, health and wellbeing in a range of diverse populations. Unique characteristics of the Master in High Performance Sport include its flexible curriculum, exposure to world-leaders in high performance sport and content suited to student-specific learning goals that meet the extensive requirements of industry.

Subjects are delivered online, and students are able to contextualise their learning to their local industry and community needs as well as experience expertise from world leading sport performance professionals.

As subjects are delivered online, there is no requirement for international students to leave their home country and work integrated learning experiences can be organised locally.

Domestic students also have access to the UTS Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation building at the Moore Park Precinct, where students are supported by world-class infrastructure and state of the art research laboratories alongside several leading sporting organisations. This location provides a unique environment and access to teams and athletic organisations who can also offer students practical placements and internship opportunities.

Overall, this course ensures graduates are prepared both theoretically and practically to succeed in a competitive, dynamic, and global environment to enable athletes and teams achieve lasting success.

Course aims

The Master of High Performance Sport course aims to produce graduates that:

  • Are effective, collaborative and responsive professionals capable of leading, managing and inspiring in the field of high performance sport.
  • Exhibit reflective critical thinking to optimise decision making and enable positive change through creative, effective and evidence-based solutions.
  • Take personal, social and ethical responsibility for their contribution to sport, exercise and health by demonstrating professional sports science practice including ethical considerations, legislated requirements and the service delivery setting.
  • Acquire knowledge of methods to increase performance and reduce injury, and apply a detailed process of planning to deliver high-quality sports performance services and optimised health outcomes for users.
  • Demonstrate professional relationships, effective and sensitive communication techniques, teamwork and engagement with key stakeholders in a multidisciplinary and diverse high performance sport environment.
  • Demonstrate professional cultural competency which contributes to the health and well-being of Indigenous Australians, inclusive of physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellness.

The Master of High Performance Sport degree is designed for those seeking to work at an expert level in high performance sport, in a variety of settings. Graduates plan, deliver and analyse strategic approaches for elite athletes and coaches, aiming to enhance performance and reduce injury. Throughout the course, students develop skills in critical thinking to optimise holistic decision making and enable positive change through creative, effective and evidence-based solutions.

Career options include practitioner roles (eg sport scientist, strength and conditioning coach, performance analyst, high-performance manager) in a variety of sport settings (eg professional sporting organisations, national and international performance institutes, schools, university research institutions, government and non-government funded sporting programs).

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Expertly lead change that delivers the highest quality athlete care across sport populations and program settings within multidisciplinary high performance sport environments.
1.2 Adapt to an extensive array of stakeholder circumstances and integrate evidence to empower optimal and sustainable sport, exercise and health outcomes for service users.
2.1 Critically appraise, assess and synthesise evidence relevant to high performance sport practice from an extensive range of sources to develop creative, innovative and effective evidence-based solutions.
2.2 Expertly solve problems by applying advanced methodologies of sport, exercise and health interventions in a logical and systematic manner; and the ability to document decisions appropriately.
3.1 Demonstrate expert judgement, legal responsibility and ethical accountability to practise within the ethical boundaries of high performance sport professions and in accordance with professional practice, governance and privacy obligations to uphold ethical practice and the values of sporting excellence, fairness and athlete safety and wellbeing.
4.1 Expertly apply high-quality knowledge and technical and non-technical skills within sport, exercise and health professions to contribute to the safe development of specialist and non-specialist audiences.
4.2 Expertly integrate expertise and synthesise evidence to determine the validity and reliability of a range of advanced methodologies, tools and techniques and employ those relevant to high performance sport practice.
5.1 Demonstrate holistic collaboration with key stakeholders to expertly design, deliver and interpret safe, effective and evidence-based high performance sports interventions for service users in an inclusive and non-discriminatory manner.
5.2 Expertly communicate with key stakeholders and adapt to challenging, complex and diverse industry contexts to create positive and professional relationships in a high performance sport environment.
6.1 Practise sensitively and to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders in diverse social and cultural settings, and in particular Australian Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree but who have extensive relevant work experience may be considered eligible.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Course duration and attendance

The course is offered on a one-and-a-half-year, full-time or three-year, part-time basis.

Students must complete a total of 72 credit points, made up of 54 credit points of core subjects and 18 credit points of work integrated learning subjects.

Course program

A typical course program is provided below, showing a suggested study sequence. Students are able to enrol in this course on a part-time basis. Providing that the course is completed within UTS timeframes, students are able to select the order in which they complete each subject.

Students are required to compete all subjects within the High Performance Masters Core Stream (STM91502; 48 cp) and 24 cp from either the High Performance Sport Practitioner Pathway (STM91768) or the High Performance Sport Research Pathway (STM91769). Each student's course program depends on the chosen pathway and sequence of undertaken subjects. In planning course progression, students should note that a greater number of core subjects run in the Autumn session (6 subjects) as compared to the Spring session (2 subjects).
