60990 Advanced Scientific Methods

The principal purpose of this subject is to develop an understanding about the practice of science. The nature of science research is discussed including some concepts of experimental design. During the subject students consider particular cases in science from historical, philosophical, sociological and ethical perspectives. A particular focus of the subject is exploring the development of current knowledge about the role and structure of DNA in relation to genetics and molecular biology, with a concentration on the discovery of the double-helical structure of DNA in the 1950s. Skills in literature searching and information retrieval are developed and consolidated. The capacity for critical reading and reviewing is also developed through the review of a major work. This subject assists students to demonstrate that they have developed a high capacity for critical thinking, soundness of judgment, and a superior level of comprehension.
