Flexible, individualised learning

The Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice combines practice-based subjects, called Studios, with elective subjects from across the university, to adapt the course to the needs of students.

We understand that’s a lot of freedom. That’s why a learning concierge helps guide students with choosing electives and career coaching for the unique professional background and career trajectory of every student.

Practice-based learning

In Studios, students work with academics and professional peers in collaborative, intensive workshops on complex problems honing problem solving skills and critical thinking on sustainable development solutions.

The studios teach design and systems thinking frameworks for students to apply and synthesise their technical knowledge and skills. The studios provide mentorship and a collaborative practice-based learning environment to develop competencies.

The course teaches students to think in different ways that enable them to tackle complex problems, while building postgraduate level content knowledge in subject areas of their choice.

The course for ethical innovative leadership

As a graduate, students become agile decision makers and communicators who tackle complex problems. They become professionally equipped to work successfully with, and for, Indigenous Australians.

Course aims

The course aims to initiate and develop students’ professional skills in an individual, career-focussed e-portfolio spanning the degree. Students plan their course with the learning concierge and engage in peer and professional career coaching in the core studios to hone their 21st century skills tailored to their career – problem solving, mindful collaboration, adaptive leadership, communication, research, critical thinking - equipping them with social and reflective competencies for our rapidly changing, digitally disrupted and technology enriched enterprises and communities. By teaching students to think and work together in different ways, it enables them to collaborate effectively complex problems experienced by organisations and society.

The Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice course structure allows for the engagement with post graduate subjects across the spectrum of disciplines. In the Master of Professional Practice, the core studios focus critical reflections on situating the learner in their professional and global context.

Course intended learning outcomes

A.1 Historically and Culturally Informed about Indigenous Knowledge Systems: FEIT graduates are culturally and historically well informed, able to work as respectful professionals with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
B.1 Socially Responsible: Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice graduates identify and engage a range of stakeholders to interpret values, needs, and priorities. They define performance requirements parameters.
C.1 Design Oriented: Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice graduates apply problem solving methods to propose innovations, solutions and strategies to meet performance requirements. They exercise judgement to reflect upon system sustainability, constraints, conflicts, risks and uncertainties.
D.1 Technically Proficient: Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice graduates apply and evaluate information, concepts and theories in a new or existing discipline. They generate and review innovations, solutions and strategies using ethical, social, commercial and environmental metrics.
E.1 Collaborative and Communicative: Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice graduates communicate in a variety of ways to interpret and transfer knowledge, adapting communication for different audiences. They collaborate with others to activate, build and maintain team cohesion to generate and evaluate solutions.
F.1 Reflective: Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice graduates self-assess competence and set goals for acquiring knowledge, skills and experience. They seek and provide constructive reviews to promote personal and professional learning.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

In addition to the above qualifications, applicants need to satisfy professional practice requirements by providing materials substantiating their professional work experience (at skill level 1 – bachelor's degree or higher) of at least 2 years' full time (or equivalent) in any of the occupations (ANZSCO Version 1.2) listed below. This requirement may be demonstrated through an electronic portfolio or CV and a Statement of Service confirming the dates of employment, and the position held within the organisation.

Alternative admission pathway

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements but have extensive work experience as a professional or manager (as per the above list of ANZSCO occupations) and a general capacity to undertake tertiary education may be considered. This will be supported by submission of:

  • CV outlining work experience and education and a Statement of Service confirming the dates of employment, and the position held within the organisation,
  • A one-page Personal Statement outlining the applicants interest in the course and contemporary professional education undertaken in support of this interest, and
  • Evidence of Prior Learning and Capacity to undertake tertiary education (demonstrated by successful completion of UTS Microcredential(s) or equivalent).

Assessment of other criteria:

  • The Statement of Service demonstrates extensive work as a manager or professional, and their ability to critically appraise their work.
  • The CV supports the Statement of Service in clarifying the depth of student experience.
  • The Personal Statement clearly articulates the applicant’s learning expectations which align with the course intended outcomes.
  • The Evidence of Prior Learning and Capacity demonstrates contemporary engagement in professional education which is successful, current and at an appropriate level for postgraduate study at UTS, and aligned with the applicant’s Personal Statement.

Applicants considered under these alternative criteria may be required to attend an interview.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning is generally offered for subjects in this course excluding the core Studio subjects.

The substitution of subjects with an alternative/advanced postgraduate subject in a similar field of study may be granted on a case by case basis. Subject substitution and recognition of prior learning are subject to faculty approval.

The maximum credit points of recognition of prior learning is 24 credit points.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is one year of full-time or two years of part-time study.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 48 credit points, comprising 12 credit points of studio subjects and 36 credit points of professional-focused subjects.

Articulation with UTS courses

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice (C11298), the Graduate Diploma in Professional Practice, and the Master of Professional Practice (C04404).

Students who wish to articulate from this course to the master's course are typically eligible for 48 credit points of recognition of prior learning.
