This course gives students the multidisciplinary skills to equip them for this rapidly changing world by developing a set of capabilities, in technology and other areas that enable them to succeed in digitally disrupted organisations and industries.

Flexible, individualised learning

The Graduate Certificate in Technology combines practice-based subjects, called Studios, with elective subjects from across the university, to adapt the course to the needs of students. We understand that's a lot of freedom. That's why a learning concierge helps guide students with choosing electives and career coaching for the unique professional background and career trajectory of every student.

Practice-based learning

In the core Studio, students work with academics and professional peers in collaborative, intensive workshops - honing problem solving skills and critical thinking on professional development.

The studio teaches a systems thinking framework for students to apply and synthesise their technical knowledge and skills. The studio provides mentorship and a collaborative practice-based learning environment to develop competencies.

The course teach students to think in different ways that enable them to unravel problems, while building postgraduate level content knowledge in subject areas of their choice including postgraduate subjects focused on the intersection of technology and community, and scientific or technological processes or skills.

The course for responsible technology leadership

As graduates, students become decision makers with a diverse skillset and they are equipped for socially responsible debate around the use of technology.

Course aims

The course aims to initiate students’ professional skills in an individual, career-focussed e-portfolio. Students plan their course with the learning concierge and engage in peer and professional career coaching in the core studio to hone their 21st century skills tailored to their career – problem solving, mindful collaboration, leadership, communication, critical thinking - equipping them with social and reflective competencies for our rapidly changing, digitally disrupted and technology enriched enterprises and communities. By teaching students to think and work together in different ways, it enables them to reflect upon their learning and profession.

The Graduate Certificate in Technology course structure assures a minimum engagement with postgraduate subjects equipping students with skills in information technology, engineering, data analytics, or scientific methods. In the core studio, the focus is on critical reflections situating the learner in their technological, professional and global context.

Course intended learning outcomes

A.1 Historically and Culturally Informed about Indigenous Knowledge Systems: FEIT graduates are culturally and historically informed, with awareness of ethical practices when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
B.1 Socially Responsible: Graduate Certificate in Technology graduates interpret their own and other's values, needs, and priorities. They define performance requirements and interpret technical contexts and parameters.
C.1 Design Oriented: Graduate Certificate in Technology graduates apply scientific thinking to propose innovations, solutions and strategies to meet performance requirements; and exercise judgement to reflect upon system sustainability, constraints, conflicts, risks and uncertainties.
D.1 Technically Proficient: Graduate Certificate in Technology graduates apply and evaluate information, concepts and theories in scientific disciplines and integrate with new knowledge. They plan and review solutions for technical and social viability.
E.1 Collaborative and Communicative: Graduate Certificate in Technology graduates communicate and collaborate in a variety of ways to transfer scientific and other knowledge, skills and ideas.
F.1 Reflective: Graduate Certificate in Technology graduates reflect to set goals for acquiring knowledge and skills and provide support to promote personal and professional learning.

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

In addition to the above qualifications, applicants need to satisfy professional practice requirements by providing materials substantiating their professional work experience (at skill level 1 – bachelor's degree or higher) of at least 2 years' full time (or equivalent) in any of the occupations (ANZSCO Version 1.2) listed below. This requirement may be demonstrated through an electronic portfolio or CV and a Statement of Service confirming the dates of employment, and the position held within the organisation.

Alternative admission pathway

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements but have extensive work experience as a professional or manager (as per the above list of ANZSCO occupations) and a general capacity to undertake tertiary education may be considered. This will be supported by submission of:

  • CV outlining work experience and education and a Statement of Service confirming the dates of employment, and the position held within the organisation,
  • A one-page Personal Statement outlining the applicants interest in the course and contemporary professional education undertaken in support of this interest, and
  • Evidence of Prior Learning and Capacity to undertake tertiary education (demonstrated by successful completion of UTS Microcredential(s) or equivalent).

Assessment of other criteria:

  • The Statement of Service demonstrates extensive work as a manager or professional, and their ability to critically appraise their work.
  • The CV supports the Statement of Service in clarifying the depth of student experience.
  • The Personal Statement clearly articulates the applicant’s learning expectations which align with the course intended outcomes.
  • The Evidence of Prior Learning and Capacity demonstrates contemporary engagement in professional education which is successful, current and at an appropriate level for postgraduate study at UTS, and aligned with the applicant’s Personal Statement.

Applicants considered under these alternative criteria may be required to attend an interview.

The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64; or CAE: 176-184.

Eligibility for admission does not guarantee offer of a place.

International students

Visa requirement: To obtain a student visa to study in Australia, international students must enrol full time and on campus. Australian student visa regulations also require international students studying on student visas to complete the course within the standard full-time duration. Students can extend their courses only in exceptional circumstances.

Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning is generally offered for subjects in this course excluding the core Studio subject.

The substitution of subjects with an alternative/advanced postgraduate subject in a similar field of study may be granted on a case by case basis. Subject substitution and recognition of prior learning are subject to faculty approval.

The maximum credit points of recognition of prior learning is 18 credit points.

Course duration and attendance

The course duration is a half year of full-time study or one year of part-time study.

Course structure

Students are required to complete 24 credit points, comprising 6 credit points of studio subject and 18 credit points of technology and communities-focused subjects.

Articulation with UTS courses

This course is part of an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate in Technology, the Graduate Diploma in Technology (C06137), and the Master of Technology (C04406).

Students who wish to articulate from this course to either of the graduate diploma or the master's course are typically eligible for 24 credit points of recognition of prior learning.
