Public health is a non-clinical field of health that aims to prevent disease and injury, reduce health inequities and promote health across populations. Rather than working with individual patients, public health professionals are focused on enhancing health outcomes and improving health care solutions on a population level in developing and developed countries. In this course, students study approaches to analysing health data to improve the health of populations.

Delivered in a flexible and convenient way, students can learn online. Course content is based on contemporary research and has been developed in close consultation with industry. The curriculum comprises subjects that provide a solid grounding of knowledge and skills required in any public health career. Students learn and are supported by academic staff who are highly experienced experts and researchers, recognised as leaders in epidemiology, biostatistics and health analytics.

With a career in public health, students can drive meaningful change that impacts large numbers of people. That’s because public health is focused on population-level outcomes. This course is open to individuals who are seeking a career in public health research or practice. The course gives students the skills in analysing data to improve health.

1.0 Demonstrate reflective critical thinking to enable critical appraisal of current practice, policy and research with the aim to enhance health care and healthcare outcomes, and transform health

Admission requirements

Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies.

Applicants who do not meet the above criteria for a threshold offer, such as applicants who do not have an undergraduate diploma or degree but whom have recent relevant work experience are also considered eligible.

Applicants must present evidence of a capacity to undertake tertiary study via submission of a CV which may include details of completion of hospital or college certificates and professional or staff development.

The English proficiency requirement for local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0; or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21; or AE5: Pass; or PTE: 58-64 with a writing score of 50; or C1A/C2P: 176-184 with a writing score of 169.

Course duration and attendance

The course can be completed in a minimum of 8 months online study, 1 x 6 credit point subject (or equivalent) per session over 4 x 7-week sessions.

Course structure

Students must complete a total of 24 credit points.
